A eulogy for Paul Ryan's political career

A eulogy for Paul Ryan's political career

Ryan's rise to the speakership is a reminder of just how much congressional leadership's authority has evolved. "What was the surprise was that he was announcing it before the election..." The Californian began as the favorite for the speaker's job when John Boehner quit in frustration in 2015, but he was thwarted by personal problems and criticism from his party's right wing.

"When I look at that picture, Mr. Speaker, I have to say, I don't see anybody who looks like me, in terms of color or gender", King said, emulating the analogy made popular by former President Barack Obama.

"Bad idea", said Republican Representative Charlie Dent. "Not only on who is the speaker but who's going to be minority leader".

"I've broken every record that any (House) speaker has ever had on fundraising", Ryan said on the day of his retirement announcement and one day after Politico reported he'd raised $11.1 million in the first quarter of 2018, bringing his total for this year's election cycle to $54 million. And now, like more and more fellow Republicans in the House, he is abandoning ship. He was former GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney's running mate in 2012.

Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, predicted Wednesday that the race to replace Ryan as speaker will be settled before the midterm elections. In addition to the historically high number of Republican retirements, numerous other classic signs of a wave election are showing themselves: low approval ratings for the incumbent president, a consistent voter preference for the out-of-power party in polling questions and a growing enthusiasm gap among Democratic and Republican activists.

That being said, there are certainly other factors that played into his decision, perhaps even more than his desire to help his kids with their homework. "It's just another issue that's floating out there, and obviously there's going to be some competition for his successor".

Jackson, for one, did well in developing a winning culture at Golden State, while Stephen Curry was a superstar-in-the-making. Steve Kerr replaced Jackson and the Warriors have won two National Basketball Association titles in the past three seasons.

"Although Speaker Ryan leaves big shoes to fill, I am confident a strong leader will emerge and continue the effort to reform Washington and keep our nation great", August said.

Democrat Randy Bryce, an ironworker who has cultivated the "IronStache" moniker, had been Ryan's best-known challenger, drawing liberal support from around the country. Janesville school board member Cathy Myers is also running in the Democratic primary. He had almost $2.3 million in the bank at the end of the first quarter.

Trumpism has its work cut out to show the world it is a viable political brand that can hold its own against likely Democratic advances in November - and can survive after Trump himself steps off the stage in either three or seven years.

"It's not a total shocker that Paul Ryan is choosing not to run for reelection, or that he saw his days in Washington as being limited", says Casey.
