Paul Ryan endorses Kevin McCarthy as his successor for speaker

Paul Ryan endorses Kevin McCarthy as his successor for speaker

The endorsement follows Ryan's announcement earlier this week that he would not be seeking re-election.

Speaker of the House Paul Ryan (R) (R-WI) listens as Rep. Kevin McCarthy (L) (R-CA) speaks during a press conference on Capitol Hill September 26, 2017 in Washington, DC.

"We all think that Kevin is the right person", Ryan said, speaking on behalf of the GOP's House leadership.

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy is reportedly talking about a potential bid to replace outgoing Speaker Paul Ryan. "I think we'll have a seamless transition".

Trump pardons ex-Cheney aide Scooter Libby
Toensing told the Associated Press that she submitted the pardon papers for Libby to the White House counsel's office last summer. Libby was one of the only people who could say whether the president had authorized the leak of a C.I.A. officer's identity.

During the White House press briefing Friday afternoon, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders declined to formally announce who President Donald Trump would support, although she noted that Trump had a "great relationship with Kevin McCarthy". He had been expected to face a challenge from Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., the majority whip, but Ryan suggested that Scalise would back McCarthy, echoing comments Scalise himself made Thursday.

Since reluctantly taking the Speaker's gavel in October 2015 Ryan has struggled to unite different factions of the Republican party. "Our leadership team, I'm saying", Ryan clarified.

Ryan's support for the California congressman comes just days after Ryan announced he'd retire in January. Asked if it was his understanding that Scalise felt that McCarthy should assume Ryan's role, the curent House speaker said "that's right".
