Democrats immediately criticized the president's move, drawing an arc running from the Iraq war to today and linking the Libby pardon to Trump's bitter feud with James Comey, who Trump fired as FBI director previous year, and to a widening investigation of possible links between the Trump campaign and Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

"Somebody's going to have to ask President Bush why he went out of his way to say he respected the jury's verdict", John Bolton, Bush's United Nations ambassador and Trump's new national security adviser, said at the time. The president called the ex-FBI chief a "weak and untruthful slime ball".

The former advisor was taken down by Patrick Fitzgerald-a special prosecutor selected by none other than then-U.S. attorney general James Comey.

"I don't know Mr. Libby", Trump admitted in a statement published by the White House. "Hopefully, this full pardon will help rectify a very sad potion of his life".

Libby was sentenced to 30 months in prison and fined $250,000, but his sentence was commuted by Bush.

And there are many more people who can incriminate the president, whereas in the investigation into Ms. Wilson's exposure, Mr. Libby was one of the only people who could say whether the president had authorized the leak of a C.I.A. officer's identity. Her husband Joseph Wilson, a former livelihood USA diplomat, had criticized the Iraq war.

Libby was convicted by a jury in 2007 of perjury, obstructing justice and making false statements to the Federal Bureau of Investigation when he lied about leaking Plame's identity. Libby was convicted at a good trial, & rdquo of obstruction of justice and perjury; Plame claimed in an declaration.

The US's military commitment to Syria, however, remains tiny compared to the US's involvement in Afghanistan and Pakistan. If any of those Russian forces are hit in a USA strike, Russia may feel compelled to retaliate.

The statement said Trump believed Libby was worthy of a pardon because before his conviction he served the country for more than a decade at the State Department, Defence Department and White House.

Why didn't Bush pardon Libby? "It's very clear that this is a message he is sending that you can commit crimes against national security and you will be pardoned".

Toensing told the Associated Press that she submitted the pardon papers for Libby to the White House counsel's office last summer.

Asked about it at a briefing with reporters, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders disputed the notion that the president pardoned Libby to send a message in the Russian Federation probe.

Trump's decision to pardon Libby is one of three pardons he has issued in his almost 15 months in office. He writes that Robert Muellers probe has just taken “a Ken Starr turn with its lurch, via the Southern District of NY, into the Stormy Daniels affair.” Its not Mr. Muellers character to which Mr. Lowry objects, as we read him, but the temptations that come with any special prosecutors special power.

At the same time, Wheeler writes, "This won't be one (Manafort) or two (Cohen) people Trump has to pardon".
