Kathua, Unnao rape cases: Rahul Gandhi leads midnight protest at India Gate

The party is trying to build up a national movement from the horror at the incidents in both BJP-ruled states.

Rahul Gandhi had announced the midnight protest in a tweet on Wednesday, and although he had termed it a "silent" peaceful vigil, anti-BJP slogans could be heard by the protesters.

During that time, Gandhi, his mother Sonia, who was Congress president, and Manmohan Singh, who was Prime Minister, faced severe criticism for not speaking publicly on the crime for days.

"It is a simple resignation letter, but they have done it to save party from the adverse publicity going on in the media about their publicly supporting the Hindu Ekta Manch who have been demanding shifting of investigations into the girl's rape and murder case from state's Crime Branch to CBI", according to state chief spokesperson Sunil Sethi. "The women of the country should feel safe", he said.

The Kathua case relates to an eight-year-old girl from the nomadic Bakerwal Muslim community who had disappeared from near her home in a village near Kathua in the Jammu region on January 10. Fighting for justice without success, the rape survivor attempted suicide in front of the residence of UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, bringing her incident into the spotlight.

Opposition's candle march was to show the outrage against the recent rape incidents happened in Unnao district of Uttar Pradesh and Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir.

However, this evening, in his first comments on the gruesome incidents of rape in Unnao and Kathua, Modi said that no criminal will be spared and daughters will get justice.

"I strongly condemn the party, which sees even rape on religious and class lines".
