Saudi Arabia intercepts Yemeni rebel missiles, drones

The facility reportedly belonged to the oil giant Saudi Aramco.

This comes hours after Yemen's Houthi rebel group announced that they had launched drone rocket strikes against Saudi Arabia, according to an update on their al-Masirah news channel.

The missile is thought to have been fired by Houthi rebels in Yemen, who a Saudi-led coalition has been bombing since March 2015, when it intervened in support of ousted President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi in an effort to prevent Houthis from maintaining the capital of Sanaa.

The Royal Saudi Air Defense intercepted at least one ballistic missile over Riyadh on Wednesday.

"The missile force carried out a large-scale ballistic missile attack on various parts of Saudi Arabia", Al-Masirah said.

More than 10,000 people have been killed in Yemen since the beginning of the conflict.

The Houthis and their allies have used the drones to disable Patriot missile defense systems deployed by Saudi-led forces in Yemen, said auto.

One of the drones was targeting the Abha worldwide airport in Asir province, which led to a temporary suspension of air traffic. The group unveiled the Qasef-1 drone previous year.

More recently, the Houthi movement claimed to have fired a ballistic missile targeting Saudi Aramco in the southern Saudi province of Najran three weeks ago.

Aramco in a statement Wednesday said, "Saudi Aramco operations and facilities, including our facilities in Jizan, are operating normally and safely". Earlier this month, the coalition said the rebels attacked a Saudi oil tanker in the Red Sea, causing "minor damage" to the ship.
