More National Guard Troops Heading to Texas-Mexico Border

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott says his state will commit at least 1,000 National Guard troops to the Mexico border in response to President Donald Trump's call. On Friday, Defense Secretary James Mattis signed a memo approving U.S. Department of Defense funding through September for up to 4,000 troops along the border.

"The idea is there is a mission here and to complete the mission so you can call it successful", Ducey said.

Brown has repeatedly fought with Trump over immigration policy. The governors of California and New Mexico have not said publicly how they plan to respond to the president's request.

"My administration has no choice but to act", he wrote.

The Border Patrol has said it caught around 50,000 people on the U.S. -Mexico border in March, more than three times the number in March 2017.

In Mexico Metropolis, a caravan of Central American migrants that had been heading north stopped inside the Mexican capital.

But critics, including Rep. Raul Grijalva, D-Arizona, said a military deployment was more likely to "do irreversible damage" than improve the situation on the border.

Mexico's foreign relations secretary said his government is evaluating its co-operation with the United States.

Luis Videgaray said in a Monday interview with local media that he will give results of the analysis to President Enrique Pena Nieto in coming weeks.

But Mr Videgaray said "no decision has been taken to reduce or suspend any mechanism or cooperation". They will be integrated with 100 Texas Guardsmen who had been working on a previous border support mission.

"I don't suppose it's a partisan downside or an id downside", he talked about.

Also on Friday, the Texas Army National Guard said 250 guardsmen would be deployed to the U.S. -Mexico border in the following 72 hours.

The group didn't make it into the US, but this is the type of activity the president wants to stop by deploying the National Guard to the border.

Abbott says there's no fixed date on their deployment and that "we may be in this for the long haul".

"Your support will free up the border agents to serve on the border allowing us to put more boots on the ground", Ducey said.

Those soldiers will be the first of an anticipated 250 from New Mexico serving in the border operation. In this case, Arizona National Guardsmen will stay under Governor Ducey's command but the Federal government will cover the costs. SC sent troops to the border during Operation Jump Start, the border deployment ordered by Bush in 2006. Evan Westrup, a spokesman for Brown, suggested the Related Press Monday that state officers are nonetheless reviewing Trump's troop request.
