Commonwealth Games 2018: Weightlifter P. Gururaja wins silver, opens India's medal account

More than 4,500 competitors from 71 nations and territories are congregating on the east coast of Queensland, Australia, for the Games, which will run until 15 April. Taylor Ruck of Canada competes. In the first game we were one up.

The Commonwealth Games 2018 has begun with a glittering opening ceremony at the Carrara stadium in Gold Coast, Australia.

Australian hurdler Sally Pearson is expected to announce that she is to withdraw from the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast due to an Achilles injury. Marc Austin of Scotland took the bronze.

Roared on by a capacity crowd at the Anna Meares Velodrome in Brisbane, the Australians romped home against England in the men's 4,000m team pursuit final in a record-breaking 3 mins 49.804 sec, beating the 3:50.265 set by Great Britain at Rio. The Indians on the whole was never on par of their known performance level at any time of the match and blew away as many as 14 penalty corners before succumbing to the humiliating defeat.

- English sprinter Adam Gemili, the 2014 Glasgow Games 100 meters silver medalist, revealed he was taken by surprise when Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane visited his training camp in Barcelona past year.

The 24-year-old posted a total of 261kg to triumph by a margin of 12kg over India's Gururaja. "He was very friendly, keen to learn and asked lots of questions".

India collected its first gold medal when Chanu Saikhom Mirabai won the women's 48-kilogram competition in a games record.
