Prince Philip Hospitalized for Hip Surgery

Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh and the husband of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom has been admitted to King Edward VII Hospital for a planned hip surgery, a royal spokesperson of the Buckingham Palace said in a statement on Tuesday.

Prince Philip was admitted at King Edward VII Hospital in central London earlier in the day.

The palace said the prince entered the King Edward VII Hospital in the afternoon and would have the surgery on Wednesday (Thursday NZT).

Philip's condition at the time was thought to not be serious.

In 2013, the royal household said Philip had once again been admitted to the hospital for exploratory surgery after his doctors revealed that it was necessary following "abdominal investigations".

He did not attend a church service last week attended by the monarch because of a hip problem, a royal source said last week.

She said they had no prior history with the family before March 23 and have not made any findings in the investigation. Three of their six children - Markis, 19; Abigail, 14; and Jeremiah, 14 - were also found dead at the site.

Buckingham Palace said the Queen's 96-year-old husband is having a planned operation on his hip.

Philip was also expected to make an appearance at a royal public engagement with the Queen at Windsor Castle last week but was not able to go as he was "feeling under the weather".

Philip has sharply reduced the number of charity events he attends since announcing his retirement, but still accompanies the queen on occasion.

The Duke of Edinburgh retired from public life last August, although he has appeared alongside the Queen at several events.
