Actor, former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger undergoes emergency heart surgery

Schwarzenegger is recovering in a Los Angeles hospital after undergoing heart surgery. The surgery team on standby were able to step in and perform open-heart surgery when complications occur during the procedure, the actor's rep told People.

The Austrian-born former bodybuilder was voted in as governor of California in a historic 2003 recall vote but proved the win was no fluke by routing opponent Phil Angelides to get re-elected.

The operation lasted several hours and came after he was getting a catheter valve replaced on Thursday, according to the celebrity website TMZ.

Since then, he has mixed acting and politics. In 1997 too, Arnie had to be operated upon to correct a congenital heart valve condition from which he made a full recovery.

He and Shriver split in 2011 after 25 years of marriage. Just a few days later, Schwarzenegger admitted fathering a love child with a member of their house staff, Mildred Patricia Baena, 14 years prior.

Arnold and Maria have four children together: Katherine, 28, Christina, 27, Patrick, 24, and Christoper, 21.
