The company says there will be no change in its financial reporting structure as a result of the engineering reorganization. AI + Research, or AI + R in Microsoft for short, grew by 60 percent in the first year - from 5,000 people originally to almost 8,000 people - through hiring and acquisitions, and by bringing aboard additional teams from other parts of the company. In addition, Roanne Sones, general manager of Strategy and Ecosystem for Windows and Devices, will become part of Zander's team. After releasing products like HoloLens and Surface Book, as well as services like Studio, the company has seen a great turn around since its dark days of being outplayed by its competitors.

The new idea for 2018 is to tie everything more closely to the cloud and the fast-growing Azure unit.

As part of this shakeup, Windows team leader, Terry Myerson, will be leaving Microsoft. Microsoft is creating two new engineering teams, with one focusing on how consumers use technology and the other on how businesses use cloud computing and artificial intelligence. Guthire also gets charge of AI speech, vision, augmented and virtual reality (what Microsoft calls mixed reality) efforts.

The latest restructuring comes just nine months after a previous restructuring, that focused more on massive redundancies as Redmond sought to better position its sales, marketing and customer support teams to sell and support cloud apps and services. On Thursday after the reorganization announcement, the company's share's gained 2% in midafternoon trading. Eric Boyd is taking the reins of AI Cognitive Services & Platform, another new faction under Guthrie's purview.

Rajesh Jha will expand his existing responsibilities to lead a new team focused on Experiences & Devices, with the aim of delivering a unifying product ethos across end-user experiences and devices.

Jha's team will also include Panos Panay, who will serve as chief product officer; Joe Belfiore, corporate vice president, Windows 10; Kudo Tsunado, corporate vice president; and Brad Anderson, also a corporate vice president. "Computing experiences are evolving to include multiple senses and are no longer bound to one device at a time but increasingly spanning many as we move from home to work and on the go". The team will be zeroed in on Microsoft's mobile offerings, Windows, and its Microsoft 365 productivity suite for the most part.
