In January, she spoke at the People's State of the Union in New York City, an event held the night before President Donald Trump's State of the Union address and which featured speeches by a number of celebrities who've been vocal critics of Trump.

In the latest Siena Poll, the first that tested Cuomo against Nixon, the governor enjoyed a 47-point lead, and leads of 28 and 29 points over the leading Republican candidates. Upstate, Cuomo was running about even against the GOP hopefuls.

The Siena College poll found that registered voters in NY state prefer Cuomo over Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro by 57 percent to 29 percent.

Asked on a conference call with reporters about a possible challenge by Nixon earlier this month, Cuomo chuckled and said it was "probably either the mayor of NY or Vladimir Putin" who was behind it.

"I was given chances I just don't see for most of New York's kids today", Nixon continues.

Syracuse-area State Senator John DeFrancisco is going after the Republican nomination.

Nixon's spouse recently left her job at the New York City Education Department, and it appeared Nixon was filming a campaign ad in the city earlier this month. "I've never lived anywhere else", Nixon says in a campaign video she posted on YouTube Monday afternoon.

A Cuomo campaign spokesman said the governor "has delivered more real progressive wins than any other Democrat in the country", including legalizing gay marriage, tightening gun restrictions, raising the minimum wage, expanding public education funding and banning fracking. Asked by reporters this month why she might run against him, Cuomo joked that she was put up to it by his enemies.

De Blasio told reporters he wouldn't go into "private conversations with a friend", but said that "whatever she does, it's her own choice". Democrats overwhelmingly favor Cuomo over Nixon, a potential primary challenger, by 66 percent to 19 percent. In a press release, her campaign office added that "unlike Andrew Cuomo, Cynthia rides the subway almost every day, and understands the toll that his disastrous mismanagement of the MTA is taking on New Yorkers".

"He also wants to increase the number of privately-run charter schools in New York City by more than 50 percent".

The poll found voters support stronger gun-control laws.

No more TV personalities or actors, they argued.

The poll was conducted March 11-16 via telephone calls done in English of 772 registered voters; it has a margin of error of 4 percent.
