One bridge project collapsed and fell 40 feet onto railroad tracks in the middle of construction in June 2012, The Virginian Pilot reported.

The victims have not been publicly identified, but at least one was a student at Florida International University, whose campus borders the roadway, officials told the press conference.

News reports saying that engineers may have been conducting a stress test that might have led to the collapse could not be confirmed, officials said.

A university student was killed in August while crossing the road that the bridge was supposed to span.

CGTN's Nitza Soledad Perez was at the scene shortly after the bridge collapse Thursday.

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., who had just left the scene before the accident, tweeted that cables that suspend the bridge had loosened and "were being tightened when it collapsed". "They were being tightened when it collapsed".

"'We've determined there are no longer any survivors", said Miami-Dade Fire Chief Dave Downey, adding that they exhausted all of their search and rescue capabilities last night.

The pedestrian bridge, which was recently installed on March 10, collapsed down during the busy rush hours at Miami on Thursday.

Carlos Giménez, the Miami-Dade mayor, said he believed MCM workers were conducting a stress test on the bridge when it collapsed, while Florida's junior United States senator, Marco Rubio, tweeted that support cables were being tightened.

The company is building an expansion to Fort Lauderdale International Airport and a worker there was injured when a makeshift bridge collapsed under his weight, the lawsuit says.

Mr Cohen and White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders have both said the president was unaware of the payment. Clifford, and neither reimbursed me for the payment, either directly or indirectly", Cohen said.

Cable-stayed bridges have cables attached directly from the column to the span, while suspension bridges string cables between towers and have other cables descend to the span.

The bridge was meant to provide a walkway over the busy street, where an 18-year-old female FIU student from San Diego was killed in August as she attempted to cross, according to local media reports.

Reportedly, a certain portion of the bridge was still under construction. So is the John James Audubon Bridge across the Mississippi River in Louisiana and the Sunshine Skyway Bridge in Tampa.

Instead, it collapsed Thursday, months before it was to open, crushing cars on the street and leaving investigators with the hard task of trying to figure out why it happened and who might be held responsible. "Our entire team mourns the loss of life and injuries associated with this devastating tragedy, and our prayers go out to all involved".

MCM Construction said it would participate in "a full investigation to determine exactly what went wrong".

"I thought when I saw the bridge coming down that I was dead too, and I didn't know what happened when I didn't die".

Zugell said most of the bridges being replaced across the state are small spans in rural areas. The span stretched nearly 200 feet (60 meters) to connect Florida International University with the city of Sweetwater.

"We are shocked and saddened about the tragic events unfolding at the FBI-Sweetwater pedestrian bridge", the statement said.

Scott told reporters that investigators would get to the bottom of "why this happened and what happened".
