President Donald Trump's nomination of CIA Director Mike Pompeo to replace ousted Secretary of State Rex Tillerson could have profound implications when it comes to us policy toward Iran. "Congratulations to all!" Trump said on Twitter.

Other European officials and former US officials said Pompeo's rise, if he is confirmed as secretary of state by the Senate, might have a more ambiguous effect on the negotiations and that, in any case, Trump's views are paramount.

The President announced in a tweet that he had nominated CIA Director Mike Pompeo to take up the role, saying the 54-year-old "will do a fantastic job".

Outgoing Secretary of State Rex Tillerson warned in his farewell remarks on Tuesday that Washington must do more to respond to Russia's "troubling behavior and actions". Graham also expressed unease about the woman tapped to replace Pompeo at the CIA-Gina Haspel-whose record includes overseeing a CIA black site that waterboarded detainees during the George W. Bush administration.

GOP Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee told reporters Tuesday that he'd hoped the president's relationship with Tillerson had smoothed over, but the differences in working styles between the two individuals didn't make for the most symbiotic relationship.

Tillerson has been out of favour with Trump for months but had resisted being pushed out. Rumors about friction between Trump and Tillerson increased last fall with reports that Tillerson had called the president a "moron" while meeting with other officials. Tillerson never denied using the word. Trump's change puts Pompeo, an ardent foe of the Iran nuclear deal, in charge of USA diplomacy as the president decides whether to withdraw the US from the agreement.

Trump will be relying on a State Department that is undergoing huge cuts.

"As director of the CIA, Mike has earned the praise of members in both parties by strengthening our intelligence gathering, modernising our defensive and offensive capabilities, and building close ties with our friends and allies in the worldwide intelligence community", Mr Trump said. Trump tweeted, in a surprise announcement. I wanted to either break it or do something, he felt a little differently.

According to a Japanese government source, Trump and Tillerson are said to have been at odds with each other over how to deal with North Korea.

He went through a list of accomplishments, including forcing North Korea to the bargaining table, but said there is still work to be done in Syria, stabilizing Iraq and defeating the Islamic State.

The decision was met with public outrage, and Tillerson's aide Steve Goldstein was one of the many people inside the White House who issued a statement regretting the ousting of Tillerson.

Corker, who serves as the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, does not think Tillerson's exit will hinder or derail the ongoing Iran Deal or Trump's potential upcoming talks with North Korean dictator Kim Jung Un.

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said he respected Tillerson's "intellect" and said he "got along well with Rex".

"I know Gina personally, and she has the right skill set, experience and judgment to lead one of our nation's most critical agencies", Burr said.

Mike Pompeo, then the new Central Intelligence Agency chief, rejected protests over her background and made Haspel his number two.
