Driver killed, Texas students hurt when bus plunges into Alabama ravine

A tour bus packed with teens heading home from a high school trip plummeted off an Alabama interstate into a ravine - leaving at least one person dead and sending injured passengers to at least 10 hospitals.

According to a Texas Peace Officer's Crash Report, one of the company buses failed to yield the right of way in May 2017 in Houston, fatally striking a pedestrian in a crosswalk as the bus turned left.

"They're a very successful band", said Kramer, adding that the second busload of students was due back at Channelview later on Tuesday.

It happened in Baldwin County, Alabama near mile marker 54 on i-10 when the bus managed to get into the median.

Students were taken to four area hospitals.

The bus' front axle appeared separated from the vehicle and at least two doors to luggage compartments had been ripped off the side.

Mack said several injured people were taken to 10 hospitals in Baldwin County, the Alabama cities of Mobile, Daphne and Fairhope, and Pensacola, Florida. He said he is keeping the driver's family in his prayers.

The interstate was closed down in both directions after the crash.

According to district officials, the students were out of state for a school trip to Disney World in Florida, when the bus carrying the band instruments and a small portion of students crashed.

The creek runs through the ravine, and there is water in the creek, but the bus did not land in the water, said Baldwin County Sheriff's Maj.

Local media has also reported fears that high school-aged children were on board at the time.
