IAF rescues 27 trekkers trapped in Theni forest fire

Kerala Forest Department on Monday banned trekking in forest areas with immediate effect after wildfire claimed several lives in the Korangani Hills near Theni in Kerala-Tamil Nadu border area on Sunday.

Reports say that two trekking groups, one consisting of 13 people hailing from Tiruppur and Erode, and another group of 24 people from Chennai were coming down the slopes from Bodinayyakanur when they got trapped in the forest fire.

He also said that people have to be careful and must take precautions as the woods are all dry during summers.

Earlier, the Tamil Nadu government informed that 27 people had been rescued.

"We will provide the necessary security to people who go on treks and inform in advance", he said.

Baldev said the trekkers had camped at a place up in the hills on Saturday night and they made a decision to return on Sunday.

According to CM Palaniswamy, the trekkers who were caught in the forest fire did not have permission for an expedition. Out of ten injured eight women have been admitted to Rajaji Medial College Hospital Madurai and two are admitted in Bodinaickanoor government hospital.

The Cubs reportedly reached out to Arrieta before signing Darvish to offer a deal in case Darvish rejected the Cubs' offer. One of the marquee free agents in this year's class, Arrieta has had a surprisingly long offseason.

Nine trekkers died and 18 others were left with serious burns as wildfires swept through a popular hiking spot in India's Tamil Nadu state, officials said on Monday.

The dead include four women, one child and four men. The security cover in the forest will be heightened to prevent such incidents, he said.

Palaniswami, in a statement, said rescue operations are being carried out on a war footing. The Indian Air Force was then called in to help with the rescue operations.

They were expected to join the rescue operation later, Theni District Collector Mariam Pallavi Baldev said tonight.

Asked how long the operation would take, Baldev said: "It's dark, it's a hilly place and it has no motorable road".

The trekkers are part of a Chennai-based club which organized the expedition from Kurangani to Bodi in the Western Ghats. The chances of forest fire is due to the drying up of trees and grass inside the forest because of the severe summer heat.
