Travel alert to Playa del Carmen scaled back

Travel alert to Playa del Carmen scaled back

Shortly before spring break, when thousands of U.S. college students descend on Mexican beach towns, the USA government on Wednesday barred its employees from traveling to Playa del Carmen, citing an unspecified "security threat" and mentioning the blast.

"If you look at the state department map right now, that part of Mexico has got the same "be careful" warning that most of Europe has, that China has, that all kinds of places that we often travel to have", says Milne.

Citing information received about a security threat, the consular office is closed until further notice and government employees are prohibited from traveling to the beach town.

US citizens are warned not to travel to five Mexican states including Colima, Guerrero, Michoacán, Sinaloa, and Tamaulipas.

The revised restriction comes after the State Department announced the travel warning March 7 due to several reported security threats.

On Friday, the U.S. government updated the ban, limiting it to certain neighborhoods in Playa del Carmen. A USA consular agency in Mexico has been closed and will reopen Monday.

The state department didn't specifically say what this threat was about but did say it's separate from last month's explosion on a tourist ferry that runs between Playa del Carmen and Cozumel.

In recent years, Mexican tourist destinations have been tainted by the country's long-running battle against drug cartels.

Officials in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, which includes Playa del Carmen, said in a statement obtained by the AP that despite the warnings, the city is safe. One of the bombs exploded, injuring five USA citizens.

The explosions prompted cruise lines to cancel excursions using the ferries.

Be aware of your surroundings and exercise increased caution. "All tourism and economic activity in Playa del Carmen continues in a normal manner".
