Major League Baseball free agency rumors: Jake Arrieta signs 3-year deal with Phillies

The wait is over.

One of the marquee free agents in this year's class, Arrieta has had a surprisingly long offseason.

Turns out, the chances of Arrieta joining the Phillies may have hit a whole new level with USA Today's Bob Nightengale reporting on Sunday that talks are heating up between the two parties, which is awesome news to hear. The Phillies have inked the best remaining free agent to a reported three-year, $75 million deal - as Jake Arrieta will step in and anchor the Phillies pitching rotation. The deal is pending a physical, according to Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia.

The cameras lingered as Kufrin tried in vain to find privacy to cry and so did Luyendyk despite Kufrin's repeated requests that he leave.

The deal is also more costly than simply the millions promised to the ace.

While he hasn't pitched at that level since, he remains a frontline starter, recording a 3.53 ERA in 30 starts with the Cubs last season and finishing in the top 10 of the Cy Young voting in three of his past four campaigns. The Cubs reportedly reached out to Arrieta before signing Darvish to offer a deal in case Darvish rejected the Cubs' offer. He has been rumored to have been in discussions with the Phillies since February, after the Cubs chose to sign Yu Darvish instead of Arrieta. Gabe Kapler has already given this young team some much needed confidence heading into the 2018 season for what seems like the first time in forever, and the potential signing of Arrietta would help Philadelphia feel even more confident about their chances to become a surprise contender in the National League.

The Phillies have been connected to Arrieta going back to the winter meetings.
