Karti Chidambaram sent to CBI custody for 3 more days

The Supreme Court had allowed Karti to withdraw his writ petition against the ED summons and asked acting Chief Justice of the High Court to allocate the matter to a suitable bench for hearing.

As per the court order, he can not be arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) till March 20 in the money laundering case registered against him.

The apex court had also on 23 February refused to stay the summons issued by the ED against Karti.

But, on March 1, 2018, when he again produced in the court, his custody was extended by five days. However, S Bhaskararaman, Karti's chartered accountant, will be sent to judicial custody for a further 14 days.

The court also directed Karti Chidambaram to surrender his passport to the ED and cooperate with the investigation.

Mehta said the CBI raided an earlier unknown office of Advantage Strategic in Chennai on Wednesday and Thursday and "recovered a lot of documents proving Karti Chidambaram was directly associated with it". That time, father of Karti Chidambaram, P Chidambaram was finance minister in the UPA government led by Congress.

The ED had registered a case against Karti Chidambaram and others in May previous year. Ltd., the company which is accused of giving 10 lakh rupees to six FIPB officials for influencing approvals related to INX media.

It said it has a recorded statement of Indrani Mukherjea accusing Karti Chidambaram of demanding and receiving a bribe to get the FIPB clearance.

Karti Chidambaram, through his counsel told the court that he had not been provided with a copy of the Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) due to which the ED should not be able to proceed against him. These included Karti Chidambaram, INX Media and its directors, Peter and Indrani Mukerjea.

According to INX Media co-owners Indrani and Peter Mukerjea, now involved in the murder case of Indrani's daughter Sheena Bora, they paid Karti Chidambaram $7 lakh to secure the foreign investment clearance.
