'Takla key facilitator of Mumbai blasts accused'

One of the close aides of the underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, Mushtaq Mohammad Farooq alias Farooq Takla, was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation today from Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi.

Seeking Takla's custody, CBI lawyer Deepak Salvi told the court that the accused was an active conspirator and a perpetrator of the bomb blasts along with Dawood Ibrahim, his brother Anees and others. Farooq, 57, will be produced before a designated court later on Thursday, a CBI spokesman said.

According to the Interpol, the charges against him include criminal conspiracy, murder, attempt to murder, and voluntarily causing hurt by risky weapons or means, among others. The Mumbai blasts constitute one of India's most awful memories.

Apart from this, Takla also faces criminal conspiracy, murder, attempt to murder and several other charges.

The capture and expelling of Yasin Mansoor Mohamed Farooq is being viewed as a conciliatory triumph for India as a few of the departing suddenly blamed are suspected to have discovered places of refuge in the Dubai and Pakistan.

Takla was brought to Mumbai on Thursday and taken to the CBI offices for questioning.

At least 257 people were killed and over 700 injured and properties worth crores of rupees were destroyed in the 12 March 1993 blasts, the 25th anniversary of which falls next Monday.

Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam has said that this Farooq's arrest is a big success for the Indian authorities, and it will mark a huge blow to the D company.

India's sustained campaign against Dawood was finally acknowledged by America in 2003 when the US Treasury department declared him a global terrorist having links with al-Qaeda. Yakub was sentenced to death and hanged on July 30, 2015 in Nagpur Jail.
