Former Trump Aide May Have Lied Under Oath About Seychelles Meeting

Robert Mueller's Russia investigation has a complex new focus: a meeting between Trump ally Erik Prince and a Russian businessman that took place in the archipelago nation of Seychelles just a few days before President Trump's inauguration.

The businessman, George Nader, was served with a grand jury subpoena shortly after landing at Dulles International Airport, these people said. He's met numerous times with investigators, the Post reported. Rep. Adam Schiff wants to determine whether Prince lied to the panel about a meeting a year ago in the Seychelles that evidence suggests was an effort to establish a backchannel between the incoming Trump administration and the Kremlin, they said.

The meeting with Kirill Dmitriev, the head of a Russian government-controlled wealth fund, was an unimportant encounter that happened while he was meeting with officials from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Prince said to legislators.

USA intelligence agencies determined that Russian Federation had meddled in the 2016 US election to help Trump, a Republican, defeat Democratic Party candidate Hillary Clinton. And then there's Prince's attempts to win business from the Trump administration for his private mercenary army in Afghanistan and elsewhere.

While Mueller is probing the circumstances of the Seychelles meeting, he is also more broadly examining apparent efforts by the Trump transition team to create a back channel for secret talks between the new administration and the Kremlin.

Also Wednesday, it was revealed that Trump recently approached two key witnesses cooperating with Mueller about what they told investigators, breaking with the advice of his lawyers. -Russian relations, according to people familiar with the matter.

Mueller's investigators continue to ask witnesses - including former national security adviser Mike Flynn - about how administration officials connected with foreign officials during the campaign, transition and the administration.

The Post said Nader has been cooperating with Mueller and has met numerous times with investigators since he was stopped and questioned by the Federal Bureau of Investigation after he arrived at Washington's Dulles International Airport in January.

Representatives of Prince had no immediate comment on the Post story, and had declined to comment on previous reports about Nader and the Seychelles meeting.

Nader has long served as an adviser to the UAE leadership, and in that role he met a few times with Trump officials, including Stephen K. Bannon and the president's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, according to people familiar with the matter.

The meeting between Prince and Dmitriev was originally probed by the FBI as part of its investigation of the Trump campaign's Russian Federation ties before Trump fired former FBI Director James Comey in May 2017.
