BJP gets shot in arm with big expansion in the Northeast

Mr Singh, along with BJP president Amit Shah, have attended the swearing-in-ceremony of Conrad Sangma-led coalition government in Meghalaya, where the BJP is also part.

On being asked what he thought of the outgoing Chief Minister Mukul Sangma's opinion that his government is a "bundle of contradiction" he said that "coalition governments are always hard to manage and the best way to manage it is to show respect for our allies". But the parties who are supporting us are committed to work for the welfare of the people and the state.

Outgoing Chief Minister Mukul Sangma was present on the occasion and mingled freely with BJP leaders. Eleven other ministers also sworn in at the ceremony.

"During the election we have campaigned that we want to have a non-Congress and non-BJP government, this is the reason we don't want the BJP", HSPDP president Ardent Basaiawmoit told reporters.

However, the two HSPDP MLAs did sign the letter of support for Sangma which was handed over to Governor Ganga Prasad on Sunday.

Banteidor Lyngdoh and Hamletson Dohling of the People's Democratic Front (PDF) also took oath as ministers.

Amazon coming for bank margins?
If Amazon were to launch its version of a checking account, it would cut the fees it now pays to banks and payment processors. Walmart attempted the bank route 20 years ago, but the industry got then-Fed chief Alan Greenspan to shoot that down.

Sources on both sides of BJP and Congress say that the results of the North-East will not have any substantial impact on the Karnataka elections.

Along with Mr Sangma, 11 other legislators of the newly-formed Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government were administered the oath of office and secrecy as Cabinet ministers.

Helped by the BJP, NDA constituent NPP, the second largest party in Meghalaya with 19 seats, managed to rope in regional parties to form a coalition government.

The only person said to in the race for the post was his sister Agatha Sangma.

Meghalaya is the latest state to install a non-Congress government, along with Tripura in the Northeast, leaving only Mizoram to the Congress. "The UDP was offered two options €" the party was offered to head the government with Congress providing the support for stability else the UDP leadership was offered to head the government for a period of two and half years while Congress would have led for the remaining portion of the tenure. "The UDP and HSPDP had a pre-poll alliance for the just-concluded Assembly polls €" where UDP won six seats and HSPDP won two seats.
