Russian Olympics doping doc 'Icarus' wins Best Documentary at Oscars

Its director, Bryan Fogel, had meant to make a film about the impact of self-administered doping on his amateur cycling efforts, but during the research he came across Grigory Rodchenkov, the former head of Russia's anti-doping program.

Fogel and producer Dan Cogan accepted the Oscar at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, with the former claiming he hoped the documentary was a "wake-up call".

In the movie Rodchenkov offers his account of a massive government doping project in Russian Federation alleging secret service involvement and describing an intricate program of sample-swapping and bottle-tampering during the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. "We hope Icarus is a wake up call, yes, about Russian Federation, but also about the importance of telling the truth, now more than ever".

In his acceptance speech, Fogel said: "We dedicate this award to Dr Grigory Rodchenkov, our fearless whistleblower who now lives in great danger". Bryan Fogels' documentary helped which lead to the ban of Russian Federation from competing in the Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

Athletes from the country competed as neutral Olympic Athletes from Russia (OAR) in South Korea.

Broadcom faces new hurdle as CFIUS probes Qualcomm takeover bid
Qualcomm did not mention submitting a voluntary notice to CFIUS in any of its interactions with Broadcom . Trump praised the move at the time, calling Broadcom "one of the really great, great companies".

"Plain and simple, Thomas Bach needs to resign", Fogel added at a back stage press event. It was fraud on an global level that made Armstrong look like a needle.

"It was shocking because it was 1,000 times bigger than I imagined", Fogel says.

"That man should be embarrassed and ashamed of himself, he needs to resign".

Given the film's real-life implications, and the daily news stories about Russian Federation possibly hacking the 2016 presidential election in favor of Donald Trump, "it's made it hard for me to enjoy the journey of this", Fogel says. He also co-founded Impact Partners, the production company that produced Icarus.

The film was also nominated for best film editing.
