However, their ship is sabotaged by foreign secret agent Dr. Zachary Smith, who's trapped inside as the Jupiter 2 veers off course and is ... lost in space.

"This is a true family adventure in the vein of the original Jurassic Park", Lost in Space showrunner Zack Estrin told Entertainment Weekly.

There have been three aftershocks greater than 5.0 magnitude since the original quake , Reuters reported. An estimated 500 more were injured.

Netflix had previously teased the new series with a dramatic video announcement, but the full trailer below offers a much better look at how the series will actually play out. The new footage also introduces a modern take on the Robot, Will Robinson's constant companion from the show's original incarnation.

One piece of the original show's core that remains is the robot and its iconic line, "Danger, Will Robinson!" But when the new colonists find themselves abruptly torn off course en route to their new home they must forge new alliances and work together to survive in a risky alien environment, light-years from their original destination.

The new trailer includes some previously unrevealed shots of the planet the Robinson family find themselves stranded on, and the "Robot", a super scary looking extraterrestrial.

Lost in Space lands on Netflix on April 13. The unsettlingly charismatic Dr. Smith played by Parker Posey is a master manipulator with an inscrutable end game. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Zack Estrin called it "a true family adventure in the vein of the original Jurassic Park" and said it's created to appeal to both nostalgic fans of the original series and newcomers who might want something a little less campy in their science fiction.
