India's Ruling Party Emerges Stronger After Polls in Northeast

Addressing the party workers at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Headquarters here, the Prime Minister averred that the people of Tripura have given the "Maoist ideology", suppressing their will, a befitting reply by defeating them through ballots.

The communist movement in the country could not be written off because of an electoral setback.

She also accused the BJP of tampering with electronic voting machines and expressed surprise on CPI-M's silence on the issue. Sarma is now the BJP's chief strategist in the northeast region, and is credited with the success that the saffron party has made electorally in the region. A coalition of communist parties and some other groups are ruling southern Kerala state, while small regional groups are heading the other states.

Prior to his resignation, the outgoing chief minister paid floral tributes to deceased CPI-(M) Minister Khagendra Jamatia at the state party headquarters in Melarmath, Agartala.

BJP chose to latch on to this opportunity and stitched an alliance with the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP), a party launched by Rio previous year after parting ways with the NPF.

The Congress failed to make its mark in Tripura and Nagaland, where it polled zero seats in the fiercely fought assembly elections. Congress-ruled Mizoram will vote later this year.

Burkina Faso arrests likely mastermind of twin attacks
A gunman who attacked the military headquarters was wearing the uniform of the national army, according to a security source . The assailants also arrived in a pickup and starting shooting at soldiers, said Moussa Korbeogo, a trader at a nearby market.

"Though the BJP secured only two seats, we have 10 per cent vote share and we came second in as many as seven constituencies besides at least in two constituencies in Garo Hills, the winning margin of the opponent was very less", Sarma told reporters.

As his supporters beat drums and danced with joy, Modi tweeted that the people of India were reposing their faith in the positive and development-oriented agenda of his party. Having recently set up governments in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur, the party's Mission North East is coming together.

The Prime Minister also paid tribute to the BJP workers, who lost their lives a year ago, by observing silence for a minute at the event.

Infusing the ideological element with a customised political strategy, BJP started approaching the tribals, not only promising them a better economic deal but also cultural prominence. However, that the rout of the Congress in three of these very assembly elections in 2003 did not prevent the formation of a Congress-led UPA government in 2004 testifies to the glorious uncertainties of Indian politics.

Chief Minister Manik Sarkar on Sunday tendered his resignation to Governor Tathagata Roy, who asked him to continue in office till the next Chief Minister takes over, officials said. This was just weeks before the election on February 27.
