Russian Federation vetoes UN Yemen resolution targeting Iran

The Iranian foreign minister made the comment a day after Russian Federation vetoed a resolution at the UN Security Council presented by Britain and strongly backed by the United States, which called for "additional measures" against Iran over allegations that it violated the 2015 arms embargo on the war-torn Arabian Peninsula state.

Security Council resolution condemned Iran for violating Yemen arms embargo by sending weapons to Houthi rebels.

Russia's UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia on Monday called the panel's "selective and contentious conclusions" unverified and uncorroborated.

The report by a United Nations panel of experts last month concluded that Iran was in violation after determining that missiles fired by the Huthis at Saudi Arabia a year ago were made in Iran. The resolution would also condemn Iran for arming Houthi militias. And he warned that the resolution's adoption would have "dangerous, destabilizing ramifications" in Yemen and "inevitably escalate regional tensions and lead to conflicts among key regional players".

The Saudi-led coalition since past year has been blockading Yemeni ports in an effort to defeat the Huthis, in a move the United Nations says has exacerabated the near-famine conditions in the country.

U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley told reporters in Honduras that the Russian veto "isn't going to make the decision on the nuclear deal".

Unless more is done by US allies to deter Iran, Trump has said he will stop waiving USA sanctions against Iran as required under the nuclear deal in exchange for curbs on Iran's nuclear activities.

"What I can say is it doesn't help", she said.
