Scott calls for reform to state's gun laws, increase in school security

A Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School student who survived last week's shooting and her father appeared on "The Ingraham Angle" Thursday night to react to the revelation that an armed school resource deputy waited outside the school as the massacre unfolded.

California Teacher Association President Eric Heins, reacting to Trump's comments, said in a statement, "Arming educators or other school employees with guns to prevent mass shootings does nothing to protect students. But he certainly did a poor job, there's no question about that".

The officer, Scot Peterson, was suspended without pay and placed under investigation, then chose to resign, Israel said.

Florida's governor unveiled a sweeping plan to boost school security for students and teachers.

Cathleen Brennan, a spokeswoman for Broward County Public Schools, said if the school board's request is denied, it will address plans for the memorial with the Marjory Stoneman Douglas community.

He added the deputy "clearly" knew a shooter was inside the building, but stayed outside for four minutes while the killing continued.

"This law enforcement officer should have done everything in his power to save these innocent children", John Tupps said.

Some officers involved in active-shooting incidents have described the terror they or other officers felt during such moments as they pursued armed gunmen, who may be wielding more firepower than the responding officers.

Years before Cruz targeted his former high school in Parkland, the sheriff's office had received 23 calls related to him or his brother, Israel said.
