Franklin Graham said he was fulfilling a promise to his father to bring the body to Charlotte. The public will be able to pay respects from 8 am to 10 pm.

A private funeral is planned for Friday, March 2 under a tent outside the Billy Graham Library in Charlotte. His wife died in 2007. He'll lie in repose on Monday and Tuesday before being moved to the U.S. Capitol.

Graham had been in poor health in recent years and had turned his global ministry over to son Franklin Graham.

As a white moderate who spoke with a Southern drawl, Graham helped ease the region's transition away from legalized segregation, said Steven P. Miller, a scholar who has written about Graham.

Despite numerous hospitalizations in recent years, Graham's work remained in the public eye late into his life.

Residents in some of Graham's most cherished places paid tribute to "America's Pastor", starting at the training center operated by his evangelistic association in Asheville.

Graham brought evangelical Christianity into the mainstream.
