1 dead in double stabbing at MA library

A MA man armed with a hunting knife stabbed a 22-year-old woman to death at a public library in an unprovoked attack on Saturday and wounded a man who tried to come to her aid, a prosecutor said. The district attorney says authorities are looking into the possibility that Yao and the woman knew each other.

Ryan added that another woman, aged 77, was slightly injured in her arm as she was attempting to help the girl amid the violation.

Ryan said the woman's identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. His wounds are not life-threatening. Some said they anxious that he "will kill somebody" - and had shared those fears with police.

Yao's neighbors told the Boston Herald he was aggressive and became more violent over the past few months.

"I thought somebody fell down the stairs", he told the newspaper.

Leslie Luongo, another neighbor, told the Boston Globe that she would run to her vehicle each day when she left for work at 5 a.m. because she was afraid of Yao.

Yao graduated from Winchester High School in 2012, according to the Globe.

Ryan said that Yao was known to police. He is being held without bail and is facing murder and assault with intent to murder with a unsafe weapon charges.

Yao was placed into custody at the Library and transported to Winchester Police Department.

The library's director, Ann Wirtanen, announced in a statement posted on Facebook that the library will be closed "until at least Tuesday". He is expected to be arraigned Monday in Woburn District Court.
