Samuel Girard Wins 2018 Olympic Short-Track Speedskating 1000m Gold Medal

Samuel Girard Wins 2018 Olympic Short-Track Speedskating 1000m Gold Medal

Local favourite Seo Yira took third after he and compatriot Lim Hyo-jun crashed with one lap remaining, with Hungary's Shaolin Sandor Liu penalised.

Samuel Girard crossed the line first to win gold in the men's 1,000-metre short-track speedskating final at the 2018 Winter Olympics on Saturday in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

A 10-time Canadian champion, Chan was sixth in Friday's short program after falling on his triple Axel, and ends his career with a silver medal at the 2014 Sochi Games and team gold in Pyeongchang.

The good: Moguls skier Mikael Kingsbury, short tracker Sam Girard, speedskater Ted-Jan Bloemen, mixed doubles curlers Kaitlyn Lawes and John Morris and the figure skating team winning gold.

"Just before the race he said to me, 'Let's go, you can do this.' He gave me a tap on the back", Girard said.

Girard finished just off the podium earlier in the Games in the 1,500.

"I don't want to be there when those things happen", Girard said.

Going from disappointment to opportunity in an instant, Girard needed a mental reset and coach Derrick Campbell and team psychologist Fabien Abejean helped provide one.

Three other defendants were also sentenced to life for trying to abolish the constitution and overthrow the government. However, lower courts have refused to implement it, saying the Constitutional Court had exceeded its authority.

"He would have loved to have this medal here, but he's happy that I'm the one who has it", Girard said.

"I think we played really well in those other games, but we each had a couple key mistakes that really cost us", the Ottawa skip said.

"Having a medal at maybe his last Olympics and my first one, a gold medal at my first Olympics, that's the best thing you can expect". "I tried to protect my spot because I knew it was an easy moment for getting passed on the inside".

Campbell said Girard had made some mistakes racing in his first Olympic final during the 1,500, when he went out too hard and didn't have the energy to chase down the leaders after a crash opened things up.

Six of the eight gold medals in this event have been claimed by South Koreans while another was won by Russian Viktor Ahn, who was born in Korea.

"This is the best Olympic experience out of the three, because I was in control", he said.

Girard will have further opportunities for success in the 500-metre event and the 5,000-metre relay.
