Erin Hamlin did it four years ago when she won bronze in women's singles luge.

The highest the US men had ever placed in the Olympics was fourth in 2002 (Adam Heidt) and 2006 (Tony Benshoof).

American Chris Mazdzer had the performance of his life to vault from fourth to second in Runs 3 and 4 to win a shocking silver medal - the first medal in men's singles in USA history.

The 23-year-old police moved to the top podium position with a composed final run but Loch needed only to complete an error-free effort at the Olympic Sliding Centre to be assured of his golden hat-trick for Germany. Gleirscher won Austria's first gold medal at the luge in fifty years, while Mazdzer took the silver medal. You can see the full results here.

"It's 16 years in the making", Mazdzer, a three-time Olympian, told NBC afterward.

"I can't believe it, it's just a magic moment", said Gleirscher. Whenever you lose, keep fighting. Mazdzer finished both the 2010 Vancouver Games and the 2014 Sochi Games in 13th place.

Dow rallies back, ends trading day sharply higher
After the stock market crash of 1987 and another big decline in 1989, the New York Stock Exchange put automatic limits on trading. From Election Day to the record high on January 26, the Dow climbed more than 8,000 points - a remarkable 45%.

Repilov faltered on his third run, creating an opening for Mazdzer, who took advantage in a big way.

German Felix Loch, who has won three consecutive gold medals, was in first in the last run but hit the wall and ended up fifth. He conquered the infamous ninth curve easily to put himself into flawless position for a medal.

Mazdzer was thrilled with his silver, having been nearly at "rock bottom" with his form only weeks before.

Mazdzer, who describes himself as a goofball who knows how to flip the switch to serious when he needs, beamed after crossing the finish line.

Fellow American Taylor Morris finished in 18th place and Tucker West did not make it to the final run.

The event premiered at the 1964 Winter Olympics.
