Trump says he was 'surprised' by abuse allegations against Rob Porter

Folks, in the midst of the revelations about Rob Porter and domestic abuse, there's one crucial lesson that should not be lost: if anyone ever lays a hand on you, take a picture.

During a staff meeting, Kelly told those in attendance to say he took action to remove Porter within 40 minutes of learning abuse allegations from two ex-wives were credible, according to the officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because discussions in such meetings are supposed to be confidential. The former girlfriend, who also works in the administration, declined to comment Thursday.

The instructions by Kelly early Friday mark the latest twist in the White House's shifting accounts of the Porter episode, which is consuming the West Wing for the fourth straight day.

White House chief of staff John Kelly says a senior aide's resignation came within an hour of learning about new accusations of spousal abuse.

One current and one former USA official said the backlog could indicate that there are remaining questions or obstacles from the intelligence community and law enforcement conducting the review.

He also made "attacks on my character and intelligence", she said.

However, Flynn is not the only person to end up working inside the White House with a security clearance despite previous issues in government only to have that clearance revoked. Meanwhile, questions were swirling about how long his White House colleagues had known about the alleged abuse.

The suspected shooter surrendered after being cornered in an apartment and randomly firing throughout the evening Wednesday. Officer David Sherrard, 37, an officer with the Richardson Police Department, was fatally shot in an hours-long standoff.

In Kushner's case, his extensive travel and overseas contacts are one reason the clearance process has dragged on, as investigators try to verify his reporting.

Regardless, Trump is actively considering who might replace Kelly as chief of staff. But the scandal continued to build after news surfaced that Kelly and others in the White House knew for months about the accusations - and built up Porter's role within the West Wing anyway. She also said his departure from the White House was not imminent. "But you know this was a Rob Porter that I and many others have dealt with, that Sarah (Sanders) had dealt with, that other officials, including the chief of staff had dealt with".

White House deputy press secretary Raj Shah fielded a barrage of questions during a press briefing Thursday about the president's outgoing staff secretary Rob Porter.

Christie told ABC News in a Wednesday podcast that Porter's name never came up when he was in charge of Trump's transition team.

On Wednesday evening, Kelly issued a second statement about the allegations. And so we'll comment on any issues affecting White House staff when we get back to Washington, ' he said.

Holderness and Jennie Willoughby, Porter's second wife, both said they were contacted and interviewed in January 2017 by the Federal Bureau of Investigation about their back-to-back marriages to Porter between 2003 and 2013. But their public support for Porter quickly evaporated, once a photo surfaced showing one of his ex-wives with a black eye. Willoughby had filed a protective order against Porter and described her married life as "walking on eggshells" because of his anger. And an incident in detail from their honeymoon when he "wanted to have sex and kicked" her.
