Indian PM embarks on Mideast tour, to engage in

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will leave today on a three-nation tour that will take him to Palestine on a short, but hugely symbolic visit before travelling to the United Arab Emirates and Oman.

Prime Minister Modi will meet President Abbas on February 10 in Ramallah.

Appreciating India's assistance in strengthening Palestinian economy through executing several projects in the Palestinian areas, President Abbas said that "he can not forget" New Delhi's support and wishes to further discuss with PM Modi areas of cooperation in the economic sphere. India had voted in the UN General Assembly in December past year against US President Donald Trump's unilateral recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital. The two leaders had discussed the Palestine issue then.

He said PM Modi's visit to the region reflects India's long-held position of supporting peace and stability in the region. "The Indian diaspora is a bridge of friendship between India and the Gulf countries".

Stating that the UAE is a key source of energy, Kumar said the relationship has gone beyond buyer-seller to that of energy security cooperation - the UAE was the first contributor to the Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserve, an emergency fuel store.

Although India and North Korea maintain diplomatic offices in each other's capitals, New Delhi has banned trade of most goods with the country, except for food and medicine.

India has consistently voted in favour of resolutions supporting the Palestinian cause at global forums, an issue that has bothered strategic partner Israel.
