Guillermo del Toro wins top honour at Directors Guild of America awards

Guillermo Del Toro took home the top prize of "Best Feature Director Award" at the 70th annual Directors Guild of America (DGA) Awards on Saturday, cementing him as the odds-on favorite to nab the Best Director Oscar a month from now.

The DGA Awards are seen as a reliable bellwether of Academy Awards success - particularly the best director prize, as 13 of the last 14 winners went on to win the Oscar for best director.

One of the most closely-watched categories was Best First-Time Director, with the top two award favorites, Jordan Peele from Get Out and Greta Gerwig from Ladybird running neck and neck ahead of fellow nominees, namely Emmy Award-winner Aaron Sorkin from Molly's Game, Geremy Jasper from Patti Cake$, and William Oldroyd from Lady Macbeth. SAG typically predicts who will win the performing awards, WGA the writing, PGA the best picture, and DGA the director.

Jordan Peele also won big with the First-Time Feature Award for Get Out.

During award season, "Shape of Water" has also picked up awards from the Critics' Choice Movie Awards (including best picture and best director), the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, and the Producers Guild of America Awards. Thirteen of the past 14 DGA Award winners have gone on to earn the Oscar for directing, including last year's victor, "La La Land" director Damien Chazelle.

Injury knocks Holloway from UFC 222
As a result, Holloway instead fought Jose Aldo in a rematch. "They told me at the end of the day, it is what it is". So, it will be interesting to see what the UFC does here, and if Edgar remains on the card.

The Directors Guild also honors directing live-action and scripted programming and even commercials.

These awards are oftentimes a predictor of who will win the award for a said guild. Last year "La La Land" director Damien Chazelle won both.

In The Shape of Water's case, the primary competitor is Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

British director Michael Apted, known for the "Up" documentary series which revisits children every seven years as they progress into middle age and beyond, was honored with a special lifetime achievement award at the gala ceremony hosted by Judd Apatow. Beth McCarthy-Miller won the comedy directing prize for the HBO series "Veep", while Reed Morano won for Hulu drama series "The Handmaid's Tale", thanking the series' producers and Hulu for being "the rare people who were seeking the opportunity to work with women instead of fearing it".
