Controversy erupts over Rahul's jacket; BJP retorts with jibe

Representatives of churches and tribal leaders in Christian-dominated Meghalaya today told Congress president Rahul Gandhi that a "deep sense of insecurity" has gripped them following reports of attacks on minority institutions across the country.

Late on Tuesday night, the BJP took pot-shots at the Congress president for wearing a jacket that allegedly costs Rs 63,000.

BJP leader Tajinder P Singh Bagga on Wednesday sent Rs 700 to Congress leader Renuka Chowdhury for the jacket, apparently worth Dollars 995, that Rahul Gandhi wore at a concert organised by his party in poll-bound Meghalaya. "Your indifference mocks us!" wrote Meghalaya BJP below the picture which was paired with the original jacket's photo and price. I can get the same jacket for Rs 700.

"You will not see him (PM Modi) hug a poor person, talk to a poor person or even engage with a poor person".

Stating the allegation "funny" Chaudhary said that the question shouldn't have been raised from the "suit-boot" Sarkar as the Prime Minister Narendra Modi wore a suit which was woven with his name in every thread.

"So @OfficeOfRG, soot (pun intended!)-boot ki sarkar with "black" money fleeced from Meghalayan State exchequer by rampant corruption?"

She said the saffron party was "frustrated" due to Gandhi's "rising popularity". You will see him with others.

Rahul Gandhi ends his speech by saying that it does not matter how small the Indian states are, every single Indian's aspirations and dreams should be equally important. "What will they say then?" she asked.

Rahul Gandhi responded positively and Laitumkhrah MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh who was also present on the occasion explained to Gandhi about the problems faced by her in the wake of steep increase in the prices of generic medicines following implementation of Goods and Service Tax. The suit was later auctioned and bought for over 4.3 crore by a Surat businessman.

He had attended the concert in Shillong, apparently to reach out to the young voters.

Dressed in blue denim pants and a black jacket, he had urged the youth to love and respect each other to make the country strong.

Gandhi is on a two-day visit to the state to campaign for the 60-member Meghalaya Assembly elections on February 27.
