Japanese city issues fugu fish alert

Five packs of Yorito fugu (blunt head blowfish) were sold at a supermarket located in Gamagori city, in the central Aichi Prefecture, by a licensed employee who had not removed the livers, according to Hiroko Mizuno, an official from the district's Life and Hygiene department.

Three of the potentially lethal specimens have been located, but the other two remain at large, local official Koji Takayanagi told AFP.

A Japanese city used its emergency loudspeaker system in an attempt to recall four packages of blowfish meat after discovering a fifth one contained the potentially deadly liver.

Toshiharu Hata, a fugu wholesaler in Japan previously told CNN it is traditionally served as transparent paper-thin strips on porcelain pates.

Its skin and liver may contain tetrodoxin, a poisonous chemical which can kill a human in less than 24 hours.

A JAPANESE city has activated an emergency warning system to alert residents to avoid eating locally purchased blowfish, after a mix-up saw toxic parts of the delicacy go on sale.

The potential for death is greater if eaten as part of a soup - when eaten raw the fugu can often cause intoxication and light-headedness and sometimes it can be purposely eaten for this very reason.

"Eating a blowfish liver can paralyse motor nerves and in a serious case cause respiratory arrest leading to death", an official warning reads. There is no known antidote to the poison. Chefs also need a special permit to prepare and serve the fish at restaurants.

Health authorities found that the store had been selling the liver of the particular kind of blowfish, called "yorito fugu", or blunthead puffer, for years because it's almost non-toxic, health ministry official Yohei Ohashi said. They even have to undergo training to obtain the license.
