A new chapter for New Jersey: Murphy sworn in as governor

Democrat Phil Murphy was sworn in Tuesday as the state's 56th governor by state Supreme Court Chief Justice Stuart Rabner at Patriots Theater inside the War Memorial in Trenton.

Bump stocks previously could not be attached to a weapon under New Jersey law, but the new legislation, sponsored by Democrats, completely bans the accessories.

"Drones have become increasingly disruptive, causing near-misses with airplanes, interfering with firefighter operations and being used to smuggle drugs and other contraband into prisons", said New Jersey assembly member Annette Quijano.

Murphy spoke about major ideas but did not offer details in his inaugural speech, saying he will go before the New Jersey Legislature to present his first budget soon to provide more details on his plans and proposals. While Christie is a friend and ally of Trump's, Murphy built his first run for elected office around undoing the Trump administration's efforts on health care, immigration and taxes.

The successor to Republican Gov. Chris Christie emphasized the action during his inaugural address, which promised to resist the policies of President Donald Trump and what he called "a misguided Republican Congress", the AP reported. This is a day to celebrate - but with Gov. Murphy and Lt. Gov. Oliver on board, the hard work also begins in full.

"This is not as much a battle between Democrats and Republicans but a battle between right and wrong", Murphy said to cheers.

Biles said she was compelled to come forward after "hearing the courageous stories of my friends and other survivors". Nassar was recently given a 60 year prison sentence for a federal child pornography charge in December 2017.

Murphy is set to take the oath of office along with his running, Shelia Oliver, tomorrow at the War Memorial in Trenton.

The state should work to provide tools for small businesses, Murphy said, instead of delivering massive tax breaks "to a handful of select and connected big corporations that frankly don't need them in the first place".

Murphy asked the Legislature to send him bills that raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour, promote equal pay for women and paid sick leave for workers, make voting more accessible and strengthen gun laws.

Murphy, who like Kennedy grew up in MA, also served several years under the Obama administration as ambassador to Germany.

Doug Steinhardt, chairman of the state Republican Party, said that because of Democratic control in Trenton, "Our ability to check Phil Murphy's radically liberal agenda from inside the system is on life support".

Oliver will head the state's Department of Community Affairs will serve as acting governor whenever Murphy is out of state. The tweet featured Murphy, his wife and their children in a group hug.
