Philippe Coutinho's 'dream' Barcelona debut delayed by injury

Philippe Coutinho's 'dream' Barcelona debut delayed by injury

Coutinho, who completed his move from Liverpool on Monday, could potentially play in Barcelona's midfield or up front - offering a threat to a range of players' first-team prospects.

The Brazilian playmaker passed a medical on Monday during which Barcelona doctors analysed the injury that kept him out of Liverpool's Premier League win over Burnley on January 1.

He has a minor thigh injury and missed the club's past two games, including Friday's FA Cup third-round win against Everton.

A deal for Coutinho to join Barcelona from Liverpool was agreed on Saturday.

Coutinho signed a five-year contract to end a long-running transfer saga on Monday with Mestre revealing that Liverpool had originally asked for €200 million euros.

"I want to thank the president and everyone who has made it possible", said Coutinho.

"We had a good season [at Liverpool], nearly winning the Premier League. they were good moments".

Coutinho is already familiar with the city, having spent time living in Barcelona while on loan at Espanyol from Inter Milan in 2012, before eventually joining Liverpool from the Italian side for €10m the following year. The directors understood it was my dream, they would have liked me to stay but it was my dream to come here and they understood.

The news will be poorly received on Merseyside, where fans were assured the Premier League club had tried to keep hold of their star.

Coutinho's debut will have to wait because of his injury, but the player is anxious to make an impact at his new home.

He added that he wasn't at Barca to replace global colleague Neymar: "Me and Neymar are different players".
