Packers Hire Defensive Coordinator

If multiple reports are accurate, former Cleveland Browns head coach Mike Pettine is landing in Green Bay as their next defensive coordinator.

The Browns hired Pettine as their head coach in 2014, but he lasted just two seasons in Cleveland. His defenses with the Jets were first, third, fifth, and eighth, and his Bills defense was 10th in his lone season in Buffalo.

Packers now preparing to hire former Browns' HC Mike Pettine as their defensive coordinator, per league source.

In hiring Pettine, 51, head coach Mike McCarthy plucked a coach off the Rex Ryan tree. Pettine's defensive units finished in the top 10 in total defense in all five of those years.

The blitz-heavy 3-4 scheme Pettine employs is similar to Capers', which should give the Packers defense a slightly easier time adjusting to his system.

Nothing gets done on the budget until the prospect of political damage stares them in the face. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt. suggested an "easy way out" of the stalemate.

Pettine was chosen to replace longtime Packers coordinator Dom Capers, a Cambridge, Ohio native, and graduate of the University of Mount Union.

McCarthy also apparently wanted to speak with Los Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator Gus Bradley, who received a contract extension to remain with the Chargers.

The #Packers have wrapped up their period of uncertainty: Joe Philbin is the offensive coordinator.

Each finished in the top 10 between 2009 and 2013.

Pettine the job over Packers assistants Darren Perry, Joe Whitt Jr. and Winston Moss.
