Flu season peaking early in IL

After more than two dozen Hoosiers died from flu-related deaths, the Indiana State Department of Health is preparing to see an even bigger spike in fatal flu cases. There were only three deaths in the state this time past year.

Across California and the rest of the U.S., the widespread flu season has led to some temporary shortages of flu medications (such as Tamiflu) in certain pharmacies, according to the CDC. According to the Centers For Disease Control, the flu is now widespread in 50 states and territories, including Kentucky.

Asa result, the 27 deaths reported as of December 30 - the most recent date available - have caused some alarm.

The nation is having a awful, horrible, no good, very bad flu season.

Nihar Mandavia, a pharmacist who owns Druggist Pharmacy in Laguna Niguel told Daily Mail Online that his pharmacy has been selling an average of 30 Tamiflu per day.

Experts say this season's 25 fatal flu cases comes after just two flu-related deaths at this point past year.

'I've already gone through eight in the last three hours we've been open, ' he added.

"I was looking at the numbers and going, 'Whoa". One was a pediatric patient, although the state didn't list the exact age.

"Influenza is in full swing in Canada", said Tam, noting that this year's flu season started earlier than normal.

Emergency rooms in and around the Los Angeles area are so crowded that ambulances are unable to immediately unload their patients.

Flu season in IL appears to be peaking early this year, according to state records.

"It started early and it shows up relatively fast", said Richards.

"Declaring a local health emergency is a public health tool that we believe should be used judiciously when local resources are exhausted", said Nick Yphantides, M.D., M.P.H., County chief medical officer, in a statement.

Annually, between 600,000 and 2.4 million people come down with the flu in Pennsylvania, with between 120 and 2,000 dying, depending on the type of strain that circulates. Visitors should also get a flu shot - which takes two weeks to reach its maximum effectiveness - and visit only one person, not move from room to room.

"People can get it any time they need to get it", Chávez said.

Of those, the CDC estimates that as many as 56,000 have died from the viral infection in a given recent year.

In California, the flu struck surprisingly early and hard this season. In 26 of those states, including California, flu activity has been classified as "high".

Experts say there are different reasons why this year is so bad.

The nasal spray, however, is not thought to be a worthwhile preventative measure against this flu.

Flu season typically peaks anywhere between December and March, according to the CDC.
