Three and a half year in jail for Lalu Prasad Yadav

As per the media reports a special CBI court formed to investigate Rs 950 crores fodder scam against former Bihar Chief Minister and chief of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) Lalu Prasad Yadav, on Saturday handed a jail term of 3.5 years and imposed a fine of Rs 5 lakhs.

A special CBI court in Ranchi pronounced the quantum of punishment for Lalu a few minutes ago.

"The court has awarded three-and-a-half years jail to Lalu Prasad and ₹10 lakh fine to him. We will go to the High Court after studying the sentence and apply for a bail", said Tejashwi Yadav, RJD leader and son of Lalu Prasad.

However, the court could not pronounce the quantum of punishment on January 5 as well and the sentencing deferred for one more day.

On Friday, citing illness and old age, Lalu had sought leniency from the court. Post verdict, Prasad was taken into custody and taken to the Birsa Munda Prison in Ranchi. The court also slapped a ₹10 lakh fine on Mr. Prasad.

Earlier in the day, Lalu's wife Rabri Devi has called an emergency meeting to decide the individual roles for party leaders in likely absence of the RJD chief.

Last month the anti-corruption court found Yadav guilty of fraudulently withdrawing almost $140,000 from the state treasury in a larger fraud dubbed the "fodder scam", which was worth about 10 billion rupees ($157 million).

He was convicted by the special court on Dec 23. The 1997 fodder scam case had virtually brought down his political career.

A total of six cases related to the scam, were being probed by the investigation authorities.
