Chelsea are on the brink of clinching the signing of Ross Barkley after making a new bid for the Everton midfielder.

The 24-year-old came extremely close to a move during the summer transfer window, with Chelsea the main horse in the race.

The England worldwide has now returned to training after a painstaking rehabilitation and Antonio Conte, the Chelsea head coach, wants to bolster his squad in January.

Tottenham Hotspur have also harboured a long-standing interest in Barkley, but sources have told ESPN FC that they are not prepared to rival Chelsea for his signature in January as they pursue other targets favoured by Mauricio Pochettino. According to reports from the Telegraph, the Blues submitted a deal late last night, in a hurry to rush things.

Speaking on Thursday, Everton manager Sam Allardyce admitted that his club were braced to receive further offers from "some of the big boys" for Barkley and conceded that his departure from Goodison Park is inevitable. "I can't see that changing".

It looks like it's going to happen.

The England global has less than six months left on his contract at Goodison Park and Tottenham was hoping to get him for free in the summer. The prolific playmaker for the Toffees is yet to play his first game in the Premier League after recovering from hamstring surgery which was followed by another injury during training.
