1400 cars destroyed in Liverpool vehicle park fire

A fire involving "a number of vehicles" has broken out at a multi-storey auto park near Liverpool's Echo Arena, where the Liverpool International Horse Show was being held.

Photos taken in the aftermath of a huge fire which gutted a auto park, destroying 1,300 vehicles, have been released.

The 1,000C inferno - which began when a Land Rover burst into flames - engulfed seven floors of the vehicle park at the Echo Arena on Liverpool's waterfront.

One witness told how she saw an old Land Rover on level three with its engine on fire and helped to lead some of the horses to safety.

Liverpool City Council opened a reception centre for people who were unable to get home because of the blaze.

Georgia advances to national championship game with Rose Bowl victory
The previous closest game of the semifinals was a 42-35 Ohio State win over Alabama in the Sugar Bowl during the 2014-15 season. All the Bulldogs needed to do was score on the impending possession to advance to the title game for the first time since 1980.

"The flames were just shooting out of the engine and coming past the tyres". We just left everything in the vehicle - handbags, telephone, cash - and just went.

The Liverpool International Horse Show was taking place at the time and had to be evacuated.

The aftermath of the blaze was captured in the photographs released by Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service and shows the shells of the blackened vehicles. "I saw one vehicle on fire but it was clear it was ferocious and spreading".

Firefighters were first called around 16.40 on Sunday but were still at the scene the following morning, New Year's Day.

Police are urging anyone with affected vehicles to contact their insurance companies directly.
