Packers GM Thompson to take on new role

Packers GM Thompson to take on new role

A year ago, veteran Packers scribe Bob McFinn pegged John Dorsey as the "best bet" to replace Thompson.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the long-time GM will move to a new role in the organization and the team could have a new general manager for the first time since 2005. His forthcoming firing seemed certain yesterday after head coach Mike McCarthy refused to talk about Capers's future with the team shortly after letting the Lions score 35.

Nevertheless, Thompson's last few drafts have failed to pan out with impact players on defense. As long as he wants to continue to work, and he's still doing a good job - and I think he still does a great job for us - we want him to continue to be our general manager.

Texans GM Smith taking leave of absence
O'Brien staying could be a sign that the Texans are moving on from Smith, who has been with the organization for over a decade. Well, the loss of Watson and a number of other key players, including J.J.

Keep an eye on Eliot Wolf as a potential replacement. It may have felt like deja vu after Capers' secondary was routinely exposed last season following the Week One season-ending concussion to Sam Shields. Of that group, only Trgovac has previously served as an National Football League defensive coordinator. Another internal candidate is Brian Gutekunst.

The NFL regular season schedule is typically released in the week leading up to the NFL Draft, which this year is scheduled for April 26-28 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. He ran the Carolina Panthers' defense from 2003 to "08".

Another key decision Thompson would make early in his tenure came even before he hired McCarthy to serve as the team's head coach in 2006.
