Virgil Van Dijk Absent As Transfer Rumours Persist

And Virgil van Dijk's arrival will bolster their defense, which has sometimes looked a bit shaky at times this season.

Having been so closely linked with Liverpool over the summer, his name has also been placed alongside Chelsea and even Barcelona, however the unbeatable City could be about to get their man. Current Saints manager Mauricio Pellegrino confirmed that the player is on the verge of leaving St. Mary's.

It looks like that his future might just turn into another transfer situation, as the 26-year-old has been left out of Southampton's last three games.

"The fans have the same feeling we have", said Pellegrino, whose Southampton team have now won one of their last 11 games. But the new boss has simply put it down to picking the best squad.

The zoo remained closed to the public on what had been expected to be a busy day at the popular facility in Regent's Park. London Fire Brigade's David George said that when crews arrived they were faced with a "very well developed fire".

Manchester City have emerged as frontrunners to complete a deal for Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk in January beating the likes of Barcelona, Liverpool and Chelsea in the process.

Asked why the centre-back was omitted once again, Pellegrino told reporters: "I have to decide what's best for the team and around Virgil there has been a lot of speculation".

"In this squad, I have a lot of players that can play". With Javier Mascherano looking to leave the club after almost seven years with Barcelona, the Catalan giants will lose a key defender. City have already tried and failed to complete a deal for Jonny Evans in the summer but Guardiola believes Van Dijk has the quality to become an important long-standing addition as the club chase a Premier League and Champions League double. "I want to play European football again and challenge for major honours and as such I would like Southampton to consider the interest in me from top clubs should it still exist".
