Netflix announces HDR support for Windows 10 app

Windows Hello is a feature now only shipping in Windows 10, allowing PCs with the necessary hardware to use special imaging techniques to let you sign in with just a look.

For Windows users, the fix starts by upgrading to the latest version of Windows 10. Indeed, researchers from German company SYSS have managed to spoof the system with a modified IR headshot, though the attempt to unlock a Windows 10 PC didn't succeed with all versions of the OS. Even Microsoft's anti-spoofing feature of Windows Hello didn't help protect systems running older versions of Windows 10.

Maybe you're one of those people who care enough about the security and privacy of your computer that you enable the facial recognition feature built into versions of Windows 10, but find it too much of a pain to set up a password. It is the update version KB4053577, which patches issues that may cause the reset of its global settings preference file.

The Register spotted SYSS's advisory on Full Disclosure. To prevent a successful attack, users need to also setup Windows Hello face authentication from scratch after the update, as well as enabling anti-spoofing. Another method involved placing opaque sticky tape over the RGB camera lens and then holding the same printout up. According to the test, newer versions like 1703 and 1709 aren't susceptible to the attack if they have the enhanced anti-spoofing engaged and are being used with the proper hardware, the advisory said.

The security company first reported the vulnerability to Microsoft back in October, and it plans to publish further test results in Spring 2018.
