Experts back Apple's move to prolong battery life of older iPhones

While Apple's approach here makes sense, the company should have been more forthright about it from the get-go; especially since iPhone users, for years on end, were told that they were insane for even suggesting that Apple would purposefully slow down older devices. It discovered that the iPhone 6's score for iOS 10.2.0 appears "unimodal" (that is, it doesn't change) in performance, but when it studied the iPhone 6 running iOS 10.2.1, the performance peaked around the average score and several other peaks around some of the lower scores.

Many customers have long suspected that Apple slows down older iPhones to encourage people to upgrade. Apple charges $79 to replace the battery if the phone is no longer covered by a warranty.

A user of the site Reddit has found out recently that the processor of the iPhone became less and less powerful as the battery of the device was of age.

The batteries in older phones start to lose their oomph, especially if the devices have been repeatedly exposed to extreme temperatures.

They were reacting to Apple's statement on Wednesday - in response to a claim by an app company earlier this week - that it had introduced a software feature a year ago to prevent phones from unexpectedly shutting down. That doesn't sound good at all, but Apple says that there's a good reason for it.

Apple said Thursday the updates were actually made with the intent to "smooth out" peak power demands, preventing surprise shutdowns that could be caused by lithium-ion batteries wearing out over time. We have now extended this feature to the iPhone 7 with iOS 11.2 and we plan to add this feature to other products in the future.

Democrat wins by one vote, leaving Virginia House with 50-50 tie
The tie would usher in a a power-sharing arrangement in which the two sides would negotiate committee chairs and a House Speaker. Two more recounts are scheduled this week in the Fredericksburg area's 28th District and the Richmond region's 68th District.

"Our goal is to deliver the best experience for customers, which includes overall performance and prolonging the life of their devices".

When the iPhone 7 was released past year, Business Insider reported on a survey of buyers that listed the reasons why they upgraded.

We've always known that batteries wear down with time.

The aging battery means your phone could have trouble operating or might unexpectedly shut down, like happened to the iPhone 6 and 6S a year ago.

Now that degrading battery performance with time is in the spotlight - and has been linked to sluggish performance - will that impact iPhone sales?

So it's true that Apple intentionally slow down old iPhones. While it's possible to do your own battery replacement, it's a delicate and complicated surgery at the risk of doing seriously expensive harm to the device.
