Democrat Franken to Leave Senate on January 2

Since announcing his intent to resign earlier this month, Franken has continued to vote and deliver floor speeches.

Al Franken will officially vacate his Senate seat on January 2, putting an end to a almost decade-long political career that tumbled amid recent allegations of sexual misconduct.

Franken is one of several influential men who have lost their jobs after being accused of sexual misconduct, assault or harassment, including Hollywood executive Harvey Weinstein and journalists Matt Lauer, Charlie Rose and Tavis Smiley. "But over the last eight and a half years as I've had the privilege of serving the people of Minnesota I've also gained a new perspective on the issues we face and the way we in Washington make decisions". The speech was disappointing to many because Franken appeared to deny the allegations.

"When I leave the Senate in a few weeks, I'll continue trying to be an educated citizen, and an advocate, and an activist", Franken said in remarks to an empty Senate.

Stenhouse, 30, had a breakthrough campaign in 2017 with wins at Talladega and Daytona and a spot in the sport's postseason. The ruse had some people thinking they would be getting married until Patrick said the next day that it was just a joke .

Franken faced a Senate Ethics Committee investigation into multiple accusations of sexual misconduct and said he could no longer be "an effective senator" while it was ongoing.

Franken experienced harsh criticism a month ago after various ladies blamed him for improperly touching them.

Franken said before Wednesday that he would convey a progression of addresses on the Senate floor before he leaves the chamber. "Others, I remember very differently".

He has complimented Smith, calling her a "dedicated public servant" and the best choice to fill his seat.
