Trump says he's not planning to fire special counsel Robert Mueller

John Cornyn, the Senate's No. 2 Republican, said it "would be a mistake" for President Donald Trump to fire Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

"I was at dinner last night with the President and Vice President".

"Our Committee has direct jurisdiction over the Presidential Transition Act, and it simply does not support withholding transition team emails from criminal investigators", Cummings said. The recipient of the texts, who was also on Mueller's team, had left by the time the exchanges were discovered.

Mnuchin added that Washington has to "get past this investigation". "Nobody has said that in any way this impacted the election".

The investigation involves whether the Trump campaign helped out in Kremlin-directed cyberhacking efforts to helped the president win the election. Representative Jackie Speier, a California Democrat, said in a radio interview on Friday that the "rumor" sweeping the Capitol was that Trump plans to fire Mueller on December 22.

"As the White House has consistently said for months, there is no consideration of firing the special counsel", Cobb said.

Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and Marc Short, White House director of legislative affairs, said Sunday in separate interviews that they were unaware of any such discussions. "You guys keep bringing that up". "We have continued to cooperate in every way possible with that investigation".

The wave of Republican concern about the investigation stems from a report about Peter Strzok, the deputy head of counterintelligence at the FBI, who was working on Mueller's investigation until he was removed during the summer.

"I believe that the President wants all of this shut down", Speier speculated during an appearance Friday on KQED in California. Trump has repeatedly denied accusations of collusion with Russia, though Mueller's investigation has found strong evidence of Russian meddling during the campaign and produced four criminal cases.

"I'm increasingly anxious Republicans will shut down the House intelligence committee investigation at the end of the month", Adam Schiff, the leading Democrat on the House intelligence committee said prior to reports of the letter this weekend.

But late Saturday, another GSA official present for the conversation told Buzzfeed News that there was nothing improper about the disclosure of the emails to Mueller's team.

Trump criticized the Federal Bureau of Investigation while speaking with reporters on Friday, calling the state of the agency "sad" while referring to released text messages that were critical of him between an attorney and an agent working on the case.
