Military police have shot a man after he threatened to use a knife at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam.

"The man is known to the police in connection with previous violent incidents". Situation secure with best rates guaranteed. In a tweet, the Marechaussee police said that the "situation is safe" and the accused has been detained.

A spokesman for the airport said the main plaza was evacuated and part of it is still closed off, but that the areas after check-in were operating as normal.

The Independent reported that police shot the man in the leg and arrested him before transporting him to the hospital.

Other pictures show an area outside the Starbucks coffe shop cordoned off by police, suggesting that is where the incident upfolded.

"He was injured and has been taken into custody", Verberkt added. A police spokesman told AD newspaper there was no assumption of a terrorist motive.

Dutch police evacuated the global airport, 9km west of Amsterdam, after the man threatened to use the knife.

Schiphol airport, just outside Amsterdam, is one of Europe's five busiest airports.
