'Day of Rage': Violence erupts in Palestine following Trump declaration

Following the first two rockets, Israel responded with airstrikes on two Hamas military facilities in the Gaza Strip.

When Mr. Trump signed an executive order in June to keep the embassy in Tel Aviv, his aides described the surprise move as a delay rather than a reversal of the proposal to relocate to Jerusalem.

Mr Corbyn tweeted: "Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital, including occupied Palestinian territory, is a reckless threat to peace".

Israel has considered Jerusalem its capital since the state's establishment in 1948 and sees the city as the ancient capital of the Jewish people.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres criticised "unilateral measures" that jeopardise the prospect for peace for Israelis and Palestinians.

"The Palestinians also see Jerusalem as a very holy place - this is not their capital".

About 10 months later, Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital indicated that he could not care less about Palestinians.

At that point, "Jason and Jared convinced him that they were just at the beginning of building relationships" in the region and that "if we do this now, we won't have any relationships to fall back on", the official said.

Palestinian officials said dozens of protesters were slightly wounded, most from tear gas inhalation.

Bodies of two men have been recovered so far. Frequently Israel has imposed age restrictions to the site, when it has expected clashes. Even if President Trump's pronouncement does not quite amount to prejudging the outcome of the stalled West Asia peace process, it has renewed long-standing anxieties over its shape and direction.

"We want the uprising to last and continue to let Trump and the occupation regret this decision", he said.

The state of Israel then denied culpability for actions taken, stating, "the IDF holds Hamas exclusively responsible for all hostile acts against Israel emanating from the Gaza Strip".

Nonetheless, it still has cells in the West Bank and possesses a large arsenal of rockets in its Gaza stronghold.

"United Jerusalem is Arab and Muslim, and it is the capital of the state of Palestine, all of Palestine", he said, referring to territory including Israel as well as the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip and the Israeli-occupied West Bank. There were no reports of casualties on either side.

Leaders in Turkey and Lebanon warned of unsafe instability in the wake of the announcement, which overtly sides Washington with Israel at a time when the U.S. had been attempting to table a new peace initiative between Jerusalem and Ramallah.

In 1976, former USA president Jimmy Carter campaigned on moving the US embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, then abandoned the pledge post-election. No other country has its embassy in Jerusalem.

Abbas said on Wednesday the United States had abdicated its role as a mediator in peace efforts.

Other close Western allies of Washington, including France and Britain, have also been critical of Mr Trump's move.

"Many countries have advocated for a two-state solution".

Abbas said he was also speaking to countries in Europe and Africa.

Writing in the Saudi-aligned Asharq al-Awsat, Samir Atallah said: "Previous American presidents never touched on the subject of Jerusalem because they knew it goes beyond the Israeli Palestinian conflict".

"It's insane. We're all resistant", said one Trump confidant who spoke to president recently about it. The council scheduled an emergency meeting on Friday. And in Turkey, hundreds of people took to the streets to stage demonstrations near US diplomatic missions in Ankara and Istanbul.

Some European leaders have showed "consternation" about Trump's tweets, "but for others, they have found a kindred populist and nationalist in the White House", said Dan Mahaffee, vice president and director of policy at the U.S. Center for the Study of Congress and the Presidency.

The Arab League, which represents most states in the Middle East and North Africa, was to meet Saturday.

ESTRIN: Right. Around the Arab and Muslim world, there were protests.
